Internships are a great way to figure out which career is right for you.
Internships are basically a short period of time (usually a semester or a summer) spent working, learning and just generally helping out at a company.
Some internships are paid, some are not. They can be at large companies or small companies. But one thing’s for sure: The more internships you have, the clearer you’ll be about what you want to do after you graduate.
Use these tips to help you land a great internship.
Preparing
• First, you’ll want to make sure you have a résumé. Your high school or college career center can help you.
• Make yourself stand out on your résumé, not only through your academic achievements, but also with your interests, hobbies and special skills.
• Depending on what kind of internship you’re looking for, you’ll need to highlight certain skills or experience. For example, if you’re looking to intern at a newspaper and you were part of the yearbook team at your high school, put that experience front and center.
• Be ready for your “digital interview.” Recruiters at most companies will search for you on Google before they even contact you. Make sure you’re on LinkedIn.com, have a nice picture on Facebook, and try and get your own Web site and blog up and running as well.
