Everything you ever wanted to know about VoIP but were afraid to ask

Everything you ever wanted to know about VoIP but were afraid to ask

By Christopher Phelps

“Alexander Graham Bell Would Have Never Thought of This”

Who would have thought that one day we wouldn’t even need telephones to make telephone calls? The latest innovation in phone service technology, Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP), requires only a computer and a high-speed Internet line-and it’s cheaper than landline phone calls.

VoIP, (pronounced “voyp”) enables computer users to make voice phone calls and listen to voicemails over the Internet. This recently perfected service not only includes standard phone features such as call transfer, call forwarding, hold and conference calls, but it also can send your voicemails to your e-mail to be heard on your computer. Using the Internet to place a VoIP call is ultimately cheaper than using a landline phone. This new phone service is modernizing traditional landline service and providing a new style of luxury to communication. For example, if your business is run from multiple geographical locations, VoIP’s phone solution allows you to transfer calls as seamlessly as if you were in the same physical location. If you need to go on vacation but don’t want to be without your landline phone, simply unplug it from the wall, take it with you and plug it into the broadband Internet at your vacation spot. It will appear to everyone that you are still in the office with a fully functional phone.

VoIP even has an option for “on the run” salespeople or other professionals to use their laptops as a phone. A software-based phone is installed on the laptop and as long as you have a broadband wireless card to access the Internet, all you need to have is a microphone in which to speak.

How Does VolP Work?

When using VoIP, your voice is converted to a digital signal that travels securely through the web until it reaches its destination and then is converted back to a voice signal. You need broadband or a high-speed Internet connection to use this phone service. But there are limits to how many phones you can hook up depending on your networking environment. Installing VoIP in a business environment can be difficult if you do not have the proper infrastructure. But, because VoIP phones use the same Ethernet cabling currently in place for PCs, it is very convenient.

However, if you have too many computers in your office, the data from the PC’s and VoIP phones could collide and create poor phone service. A computer consultant can assist with separating the traffic to ensure that proper voice quality is maintained. A good business-grade Internet router/firewall is also important to maintain superior VoIP quality. Wireless handsets and adapters are available. For your more robust business phone systems that require automated attendants and various extension options, many VoIP carriers have some impressive software to allow you to manage these situations.

VolP Benefits

Voice over Internet Protocol has various advantages for users and is much more inexpensive than regular phone service providers- as long as you pay for an Internet connection. For those who love to multi task on the computer and hate having to run to pick up the phone, VoIP phone service would provide the convenience of being able to answer the phone while sitting at the computer. Business employees and people who travel regularly can bring a VoIP phone on the road and enjoy using their telephone wherever there is an Internet connection. You can call anyone, anytime, anywhere in the world. Even when your computer isn’t on, you can use the phone service, and you’ll end up saving money on your power bill.

Are VoIP Phones Expensive?

One of the stigmas attached to VoIP is the cost of buying the actual hardware. Though it's obvious why VoIP is cheaper than regular PSTN with regard to the monthly bill, many balk at the thought of replacing their existing hardware with VoIP compatible phones. For a long time this was a valid concern. In fact, it was something of a catch 22 situation for VoIP. Lower costs come with mass adoption and mass adoption comes with lower costs!

However even with this roadblock, VoIP adoption has skyrocketed and now the price differential is so low that it's easily affordable. People are still sometimes stuck though with the image of how VoIP phones are costly. There's no doubt that VoIP phones can be expensive. Some include high end features such as those designed to send and receive high quality HD voice. But there are cheaper phones as well to suit every budget.

VoIP phones vs PSTN phones

On an average, VoIP phones do cost more than PSTN phones. This is because they almost always have more features than a comparable PSTN instrument. The real cost savings of VoIP are being reaped by businesses and these users need more than just simple calling functions. Hence the large number of VoIP phones you see are tailored to these users.

In addition, VoIP phones need to be compatible with PSTN networks and for this they need a device known as an ATA adapter in some form or another. Certain phones are just regular analog phones with the ATA adapter built in and sometimes it's an external dedicated device. There's still no standardization of the way VoIP services are delivered, but this is a factor that will become a lot clearer in the coming years.

Starting prices and basic features

It's important to ensure that your VoIP phone is compatible with your service. If you buy a "Skype" phone for example, it's not going to work with a regular SIP VoIP service. Having said that, any decent VoIP phone should be able to connect using the SIP protocol as it's the standard.

As an example, one of Cisco's IP phones is available for just $16. Of course it has just basic functionality, but even that includes features such as Power over Ethernet (PoE), an LCD display and call forwarding. However, it runs the SCCP VoIP protocol and won't work with SIP phones. This gives you an example of the few pitfalls you need to look out for.

10 Things Android Does Better Than IPhone from Maximum PC

10 Things Android Does That IPhone Doesn't - republished from Maximumpc.com

I wanted to write an article about how much I love my Android, but this article from MaximumPC.com was just so good I can't imagine me improving on it:)

I just got my Android HTC Hero from Sprint about 6 weeks ago, everybody in the IT services shop I work out of drank the IPhone coolaid. The shop (CWP Tech Solutions in Frederick Md) got everyone Iphones because they are early adopters, at the time the IPhone was the neatest thing since sliced bread... Google, it seems, outdid Apple.

When Android first debuted on the HTC Dream (also known as the G1) back in October of 2008, it was deemed an "iPhone Killer." While it didn't quite slay Apple's handset, it was the first step in a revolution against the tyrannous iPhone. The initial Android platform bested the iPhone OS on several levels, but lacked some key functionalities that the iPhone could provide. Since then, Android has grown - not only meeting all of the functionalities of the iPhone, but besting it in nearly all aspects from an extensive list of devices to a growing Android Marketplace. Here is our list of the top 10 things Android does better than the iPhone.

1: Android can Run Multiple Apps at the Same Time

Starting with version 1.0, Android has been able to run multiple applications at the same time regardless of whether they are system apps or apps from the Android Marketplace. The current version of iPhone OS does offer limited multitasking, but only allows native applications such as Mail, iPod and Phone to run in the background. Android users benefit greatly from this discrepancy, as they can receive notifications, listen to music, or even record GPS data without keeping the application open. Apple will try to level the playing field with iPhone OS 4, granting developers access to a small and limiting list of APIs that can run certain services in the background, but it's a long way from the true multitasking that Android has.

2: Android Keeps Information Visible on Your Home Screen

One of the key features Android has is a customizable home screen keeps active widgets right at your fingertips, always accesible and always visible - without having to launch an application first. There are widgets for just about every app in the Android Marketplace from playing music to checking the weather and keeping up to date on Facebook. Meanwhile iPhone users are force to flip through their app list to locate and launch each app. If you wanted to check the forecast, for example, you would have to find the app, launch it, and then wait for it to load. With Android, all of that information can be displayed directly on your home screen, never more than a finger swipe away.

3: Android Has a Better App Market

It's true that Apple's App Store has over 180,000 applications, while the Android Marketplace has only just broken the 50,000 mark but Android's rapid growth and adoption give it the potential to catch up to the iPhone App Store. Android also has another advantage: a completely open market. Apple receives around 10,000 app submissions per week, yet many apps are overlooked because they appear too simple or denied because a similar app already exists. The Android Marketplace is driven entirely by its consumers, so the best app is the one that succeeds - not the first one to reach the market. In addition, the Android Marketplace doesn't censor its apps, so the possibilities are truly endless.

4: Android Gives You Better Notifications

The iPhone has some trouble with notifications. Because it's restricted to pop-up notifications, it can only handle one at a time and because it lacks multitasking, applications must be open in order for them to make notifications. Android, on the other hand, has a convenient notification bar which displays an icon for every notification you have waiting. The notification bar can also be pulled downward to reveal more detail about each notification. Android also allows app developers to make notification details viewable from the lock screen, something the iPhone can only do with native applications.

5: Android Lets You Choose Your Hardware

Apple users are encouraged to "Think Different" but when it comes to the actual hardware, they don't get much choice. You can pick the color, either black or white, and you get to choose between the 16GB or the pricier 32GB version. Other than that, you're stuck with the 3.5-inch, 320x480 pixel display, 256MB of RAM, and 600MHz processor. Because Android is an open platform, manufacturers have the freedom to pair it with any hardware they want, like the Nexus One (with 3.7-inch, 480x800 pixel display, 512MB of RAM, and 1GHz Snapdragon processor) or the Motorola Droid which has a physical keypad. Obviously, available selections will vary by carrier - speaking of which....

Google Android Phones Outsell IPhones For The First Time

Report: Google Android surpasses iPhone in U.S.

Google's Android operating system edged out Apple's iPhone operating system for the No. 2 spot in the U.S. consumer smartphone market in the first quarter, research firm NPD Group reported Monday.

According to NPD, devices running Android accounted for 28 percent of the units sold to U.S. consumers in the first quarter of 2010. BlackBerry devices made by Research In Motion, which use RIM's homegrown operating system, took the top spot with 36 percent of the U.S. market. Apple's iPhone, which had been in the No. 2 spot previously, fell to third place with 21 percent of the market.

This chart shows the sharp growth in Google Android phones among consumers in the U.S. market compared to other smartphone operating systems.

(Credit: NPD Group)

NPD's figures are based on self-reported consumer surveys and they estimate the number of devices sold to consumers. The figures do not include sales of devices to business customers through enterprise contracts.

Android is an operating system that is available on several different models of phones made by different manufacturers, such as Motorola, HTC, and Samsung. Meanwhile, Apple's operating system is used only on Apple's own iPhone.

Ross Rubin, an analyst with NPD, attributed the strong growth in Android to the fact that devices using Android software are now available on all major U.S. carrier networks. Verizon Wireless, in particular, has helped fuel success for the operating system. Verizon launched a major marketing campaign for devices, such as the Motorola Droid, last year. And Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless operator, has also been including Android devices in its buy-one-get-one free smartphone promotion. T-Mobile USA also features Android phones as its flagship smartphones, and AT&T has begun selling Android phones.

"The wireless carriers in the U.S. are still the king makers in the mobile market," said Rubin. "Verizon in particular is what is making the Android so successful right now with its promotions and marketing."

Rubin said that strong sales of the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, and RIM's Blackberry Curve via these promotions have helped keep Verizon's smartphone sales on par with AT&T in the first quarter. NPD's data suggests that smartphone sales at AT&T account for nearly a third of the entire smartphone market, about 32 percent. Verizon Wireless accounted for 30 percent of smartphone sales. T-Mobile made up 17 percent of all smartphone sales and Sprint brought in 15 percent of all smartphone sales.

There is no question that Apple's iPhone is still very popular. Last month, AT&T reported that it had activated about 900,000 iPhones for new customers during the first quarter. It also sold another 1.8 million iPhones to people who were already AT&T customers. Without the iPhone, AT&T's subscriber growth for contract customers would have been negative.

But the NPD findings suggest that sales of the phone could be even higher in the U.S. if the device was available on other carrier networks, such as Verizon Wireless. Reports surfaced in March that the iPhone could be coming to Verizon soon. But definite plans for a Verizon iPhone have still not been announced.

"If the iPhone was available today on Verizon, Apple would certainly grow market share," Rubin said. "But it's harder to say what will happen in the long term. It's difficult to know what the feature-set will look like on phones in a year. But it's clear the iPhone still has enough cachet today to pick up market share."

What RIM's New Smartphone Needs to Succeed

JR Raphael, PC World

RIM BlackBerryResearch in Motion may have something big up its sleeves.

The company best known as RIM is said to be working on a revamped version of its BlackBerry smartphone. The device, reports suggest, will boast a touchscreen, a slide-out keyboard, and a brand new operating system that immediately brings the iPhone to mind.

The apparent similarity is no coincidence: RIM's new device, The Wall Street Journal reports, is being built specifically to better complete with Apple's prized device. The iPhone, combined with the growing number of Android-based handsets, has been chipping away at RIM's share of the mobile market for too long -- and now, RIM seems ready to do something about it.

RIM's New BlackBerry: The Touchscreen Competitor

RIM BlackBerry Touchscreen SmartphoneImage courtesy TheCellularGuru.com According to the latest blog-driven rumors, RIM's updated BlackBerry will be called the Torch 9800 and will debut on AT&T sometime this summer. If the various "people familiar with the device" are to be believed, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 will feature swipe-style controls, a universal search bar, and home screens with support for user-selected icons.

Other suspected specs for the new BlackBerry smartphone include 4GB of internal storage and a 5-megapixel camera. The device would likely use RIM's upcoming BlackBerry 6 OS, which features an improved Webkit browser and built-in social networking integration.

With the inception of the VoIP for business, things have become quite simpler these days. Nowadays, nearly all the corporate and business enterprises should bear in mind they must possess and manage good communication system. Now, it is quite interesting to note that if they use phone as the prominent tool for communication then a lot can be done by switching over to the business VoIP solutions. It has been witnessed that these solutions carry more added benefits than the conventional PSTN systems. As a matter of fact, these switch over process would definitely support the business enterprises to limit their communication cost to a significant level.

If these solutions are compared to the traditional PSTN services then it can be found that they are quite cost-effective. Moreover, these advanced IP solutions would not be entirely concentrated towards a particular call like the traditional PSTN systems. Moreover, the effective solution of Internet telephony uses a software of switching method for accessing the calls. This unique technology would allow the corporate and business establishments to cut down the cost of calling, as they are not extremely regulated like the the PSTN calls.

As a matter of fact, communicating with customers and clients across the boundaries should no longer be a concern these days. Moreover, you can even experience other extra benefits while accessing the long distance and international calls.

Recent announcements are sketching a slight shift away from the Android platform.

Bloomberg (via BusinessWeek) reports that Google's Android alliance is showing signs of strain. Although more than 60,000 Android-based mobile phones are sold and activated each day, there is now an obvious shift within partners to steer away from Google's mobile OS... or at least, place the main focus on a variety of options. Verizon Wireless, which currently offers the popular Motorola Droid, is a prime example of the shift, declaring on Wednesday that it will not carry the Nexus One smartphone as previously intended.

USA is Number One for Broadband Worldwide

Verizon CEO: Studies be damned, US is tops in broadband

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg sat down for an on-the-record conversation yesterday at the Council for Foreign Relations, and he pulled no punches: the US is number one in the world when it comes to broadband. We're so far ahead of everyone else, it's "not even close."

Given that a central piece of the National Broadband Plan was concerned with America's poor showing on broadband metrics, this was an intriguing claim to make. In essence, Seidenberg hauled out one of the NBP's main reasons for existence and just kicked it in the groin. Perhaps we don't even need a national plan?

Seidenberg: Anytime government—whether it's the FCC or any agency—decides it knows what the market wants and makes that a static requirement, you always lose. So this FCC decided that speed of the network was the most important issue. So that's all they measured.

Switch to a digital phone system

Cut your costs and Save the hassle of waiting on the phone company

More people are saving money with new technology, digital phone service uses a high speed internet connection to operate your telephone service and no longer do phone users have to wait for their analog phone service to get fixed.

Digital Phone Systems Frederick Md

There are various Internet voice options and features to utilize with digital phone systems, but first you must take the steps to get started.

Selecting a internet voice provider suitable for your needs will depend on how many lines you need, if you already have high speed internet, how many international calls you plan to make and several other factors. When you buy your internet voice package it should include a telephone adapter box, an Ethernet wire, and a telephone wire.

How many phones do you want to connect to your internet voice system?

If you only have one line then hook it up right near your cable modem and telephone adapter are placed. To connect several phones, it is easiest to disconnect your outside telephone junction box and then connect your new telephone adapter through your house wiring system.

Alternatively you could wire the phones on your internet line separate from your regular house phones. Using a cordless phone would work well in this case because you wouldn't have to deal with all the wires.

When you sign up with your internet voice provider, you'll be able to choose the phone number you want for your new line and it'll get taken care of. If you are converting from an older analog phone there is a slight chance that you won't be able to use your old number. After you receive the voice package from your provider usually you will have to register online to confirm your address and phone number.

Connecting everything is a piece of cake, just connect the new telephone adapter to your high speed internet connection and then hook up your phone. Connecting and fixing digital phone service is a whole lot less hassle then traditional phone service because instead of waiting hours and hours for a person to come service your phone all you have to do use your internet connection.

Digital Business Phone Systems

An important aspect of communication for businesses is a digital business phone system, which provides a way to be in touch with all of your clients and customers as well as the partners and employees within your company.

Many options are available with digital phone systems, to decide what system is suitable you should consider the size of your business and how many phones you would need. When selecting which digital business phone service to buy, you must ensure that the brand is a quality make and it has all the features you need for the business communication system.

Don't hesitate to ask questions about different telephonic systems because you want to feel confident that the system you buy is exactly what you need. You should ask how much space the telephones occupy, if any wiring is required and if there are any extra attachments.

Ask around to other people you know who have bought digital business phone systems about how effiencient it works and if there are any details to check before purchasing a telephone system. You can also investigate different brands and features online through the various business phone system retailers and manufacturers.

When planning to buy a digital business phone system, make sure your new system is compatible with the accessories you already use such as your current voice mail system.

It's better to choose a phone system that has spare parts and accessories you can easily find in electronics stores so that when you need them you can purchase them right off the shelf instead of ordering them and having to wait for them to come in the mail.

Don't forget to test the system before finishing the purchase to make sure it is working efficiently and so you don't have to come back with second thoughts.

If you have employees in your company, who work from their homes, installing the Voice over Internet Protocol is an option to bring down the costs of communication. Once you look into these basic things, your Digital business Phone system will be fully functional.

What Is VOIP All About Anyway?

VoIP Phone Service.
Need Business VoIP Service in Frederick Maryland?

So how does VoIP phone service work?

You need a broadband connection and a router. This combination works by allowing you to take phone calls just like you did before. However, with a VoIP phone, the set up is now digital instead of through a regular phone line. A VoIP phone also has a gateway that connects you to a network. Your voice is then converted to a digital sound and this information can be sent in packets enabling you to have great sound and connection to people with and without the VoIP service.

What does it take to pull this off?

You need a broadband internet connection, either a cable internet connection or a dedicated T1 line. Although VoIP can work with other internet service providers, the voice reception quality is nowhere good as it would be with broadband connection.

What benefits does a VoIP phone over the analog system from your local phone company?

The biggest benefit is that the VoIP phone costs a lot less that the traditional phone lines. This applies whether you use a cell phone or home phone service. Unlike conventional business phone services, regular long distance callers really notice the benefits of a VoIP phone. The more long distance calls you make the more you save since with a VoIP phone the location of the caller and the person receiving the call is not important. Since you are also able to take you adapter with you, this service is perfect for the travelers among you. VoIP phones are also cost effective if you wish to add to your service. For example, instead of the normal fee of adding a phone line to your traditional home service, you need only pay a minimal amount since those with VoIP phones need to install any additional equipment.

What are the disadvantages of switching to a VoIP business phone?

There are some minor disadvantages. Poor voice quality can occur when the reception is poor, which one reason CWP Tech Solutions suggests your business have cable internet rather than DSL . However, this is something we already have to contend with cell phones.

What IS VoIP Anyway?
Wikipedia's Definition:

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications services — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applications — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.

Lower Cost of Doing Business With VOIP

Lowering the cost of doing business with VoIP business phones.

The most compelling case for business phone service is made by the tremendous savings in call costs that it achieves. Calls through VoIP service providers cost significantly less (some quote savings of up to 80%) than the traditional services and has proved to be one of the main reasons for the ever-increasing popularity of business VoIP. Businesses have also benefited in another - more indirect - way from using business phone services. Use of this new technology has meant better integration in the modern office and more efficient use of employee resources. Business VoIP offers wonderful features like Outlook integration, remote office, click to call, conference calls and many other collaboration tools.

  1. VOIP is available anywhere in Maryland, Virginia or Washington DC where high speed Internet can be found. Where ever broadband iBoldnternet is VOIP can be. All you need is a DSL, T1, Cable Modem or other fast connection and you’re equipped to start using VOIP business phones.
  2. VOIP for Faxing
  3. VOIP offers huge cost savings. Many customers reports saving 50% on their phone bill for VOIP business phones.
  4. Take Your Business Phone Home With You: If you have WiFi in your home, and a WiFi ready cell phone, you can use both to move freely around the house while using your VOIP connection. As long as you stay in range of your wireless signal

Why Choose VOIP For Your Office Phone System?

Why Choose VOIP For Your Office Phone System?

VOIP Business Phones for Frederick Maryland
Imagine a business without a telephone... can't do it can you?

Every business has a phone, in the past we all got phones from the local phone company, now businesses have options: VOIP or internet phones, besides being much less expensive than a landline, what are some of the other amazing capabilities can your company get from going VOIP over a conventional landline?

What can a VOIP or Internet Phone System do for your company that a landline can't do?

Business Voicemail to your Email

Which would you prefer? Call a number to listen to your voicemails OR read them in an email?

This is more than merely convenient, being able to keep track of all your voicemails by having them all logged (and time stamped) in the email program of your choice. Now you've got a log of who called and when so you can prioritize who needs to be called back first. With a landline, you had to call your voice mail and hit 7 to delete or hit 9 to save... what if you accidentally deleted one that you REALLY needed to call back? Ever happen to you?

With a business VOIP calling long distance is cheaper, calling a land line FROM a VOIP is (on average) often less expensive, calling another VOIP from your VOIP is cheaper still.

PORTABILITY
Can you uplug your company phone from it's jack, take it home (or while traveling on a business trip, or vacation for that matter) plug that landline into the nearest phone jack and make a call? Can that phone call show up in the caller id of your intended caller and have them see your company phone number displayed in the caller id?

With VOIP you can uplug that VOIP business phone, plug it into a hard wired internet connection (just as if it were a computer) and all calls to your office line can be taken from anywhere you have an internet connection. Try that with a landline.

Does VOIP work with a WiFi connection?
Indirectly. All you have to do is connect your business VOIP phone to to your laptop (you do have to install some software to pull this off)
